GM Rushing Into Shanghai’s Expo Where Google Refused to Tread

Post  ianadds on Wed Apr 07, 2010 6:54 am

I will take my wife and kids to visit Shanghai in October.
GM Rushing Into Shanghai’s Expo Where Google Refused to Tread
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&sid=aVIJs62fewMc&pos=10

April 6 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Co. expects three million people to visit its pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo. The chance to lure customers in what has become GM’s largest market this year makes being there worthwhile, even as companies such as Google Inc. face difficulties operating in China.

“All nations understand that if they don’t go, they will miss an opportunity,” he said. Their attendance also “gives us face,” or enhances China’s reputation, while supporting what Shen calls the government’s core interest: “the survival of the Communist Party.”
Very typical Chinese thinking 101.

LOL, I love the Australian Pavillion! What's with the Chinese writing next to it though?!

Maybe it has something to do with this:

http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/national/australian-born-families-to-be-a-minority-by-2025/story-e6freooo-1225854921892

"According to 2006 census data, 40 per cent of Australia's population were born overseas, or have at least one parent who was born overseas. But if immigration continues at current levels, that will jump to more than 50 per cent by 2025.

The news comes days after Tony Burke's appointment as Australia's first population minister, tasked with managing the huge influx of migrants expected to help swell the population to 36 million by 2050, up from 22 million today.

A survey of 3000 people has revealed 70 per cent of Australians do not want a bigger population and less than a quarter favoured immigration as the main contributor."

Shanghai’s $44 Billion Expo Opens After Fireworks, Laser Show

Post  ianadds on Sat May 01, 2010 12:50 am

Shanghai’s $44 billion World Expo opens its gates to the public today as China’s richest city prepares to host an estimated 70 million visitors during the six-month long event.

They’ve led to the construction of iconic structures, including the Eiffel Tower and Seattle’s Space Needle. The events are now divided into so-called Universal Expos, such as the one in Shanghai, and smaller, more specialized exhibitions.

Shanghai’s expo features exhibits by more than 240 countries, companies and organizations spread over a 5.3 square- kilometer (3.3 square-mile) park.

Traffic across the city’s Nanpu and Lupu bridges and through a tunnel near the expo site was halted for the opening ceremony last night. Pedestrians and vehicles were barred from the Huangpu riverfront and parts of the Lujiazui financial district, home to HSBC Holdings Plc and Citigroup Inc.
