Catholic Church no longer swears by truth of the Bible
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article574768.ece
THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true.
The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect “total accuracy” from the Bible.
“We should not expect to find in Scripture full scientific accuracy or complete historical precision,” they say in The Gift of Scripture.
The document is timely, coming as it does amid the rise of the religious Right, in particular in the US.
/snip
The document shows how far the Catholic Church has come since the 17th century, when Galileo was condemned as a heretic for flouting a near-universal belief in the divine inspiration of the Bible by advocating the Copernican view of the solar system. Only a century ago, Pope Pius X condemned Modernist Catholic scholars who adapted historical-critical methods of analysing ancient literature to the Bible.
In the document, the bishops acknowledge their debt to biblical scholars. They say the Bible must be approached in the knowledge that it is “God’s word expressed in human language” and that proper acknowledgement should be given both to the word of God and its human dimensions.
/snip
This is how they will do it guys; by underminining the Bible as the only source of truth in the world and the only measure of right and wrong. Catholicism already teaches that the Holy Tradition is equal with the Hold Scriptures, however we are seeing more and more respectable Catholic bishops and even cardinals putting doubt in the Scriptures.
Once this happens then it's much easier to control the masses through "Holy Tradition" and people will not be able to refute it with any authority, since the Bible is the only authority that we still hold on to in this day and age.
I am afraid to say that interesting times are ahead of us to say the least!

Outstanding point! The power takin' away from the Bible is placed more fully back to the Pope. And what the Pope says, as I stated in another thread, that's God's voice according to the Vatican.

Re: Catholic Church no longer swears by truth of the Bible
Hi all,
You forgot Mary! She is also viewed so highly by the Catholic church and this dogma has placed Mary even higher than Christ himself, because Catholics also see her as a Co-Redemptrix and directly replaced Jesus's role for humanity with Mary.
In 1854 Pope Pius IX, invoking apostolic authority, wrote: “We . . . DECLARE, AND PRONOUNCE, AND DEFINE, that the doctrine which holds that the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her Conception, has been, by a special grace and privilege of Almighty God, and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the human race, preserved and exempted from every stain of original sin, is revealed by God, and consequently is to be believed firmly and inviolably by all the faithful” (p. 232).
This dogma is known as the “Immaculate Conception” and states that Mary, like her divine Son, is exempt from original sin.
The same Pope Pius XII decreed again further down: “By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by Our own authority, We pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory” (p. 244).
This dogma is known as the “Bodily Assumption.”
For the Roman Catholic Church the dogma of the Immaculate Conception gained additional significance from the reputed apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes in 1858. At Lourdes a 14-year-old girl, Bernadette Soubirous, claimed that a beautiful woman appeared to her and said, "I am the Immaculate Conception". Many believe the woman to have been the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In this sense the dogma of the Immaculate Conception defined by Pope Pius IX is also viewed as a key example of the use of sensus fidelium shared by believers and the Magisterium rather than pure reliance on Scripture and Tradition. http://www.fides.org/eng/approfondire/totustuus/immacolata02.html
The Vatican quotes in this context Fulgens Corona, where Pius XII supported such a faith: "If the popular praises of the Blessed Virgin Mary be given the careful consideration they deserve, who will dare to doubt that she, who was purer than the angels and at all times pure, was at any moment, even for the briefest instant, not free from every stain of sin?" Fulgens Corona, 10
What meaning does this have for Bible-believing Christians? There are several serious problems that cannot be overlooked, even in the name of respectful relationships with persons of other faiths.
First, we must remember that all “Mariology” is based on nonscriptural sources and is based on unbiblical teachings such as the natural immortality of the soul. In fact, Christians who do not believe in the immortality of the soul will be quick to note that the two primary constituent elements of spiritualism—the natural immortality of the soul and communication with the spirits of the dead (Mary and “the saints”)—are both present in Mariology and in Marian theology. The ever-adapting nature of the spiritualist challenge to biblical Christianity requires that we pay special attention when these two elements combine in the heart of a powerful and widespread teaching of another Christian denomination.
Spiritualism is the adhesive that is bringing Protestantism and Catholicism into both closer contact and greater agreement in advancing unbiblical ideas.
I feel this will be a major topic of conversation between Protestants and the Catholic Church. I also feel this will be one of the initiatives aimed at greater religious unity or cooperation, which will further strengthen the Ecumenist movement that is gaining strength each day.
God bless all!
