Movie delay
thought this was interesting...
'Red Dawn' likely not coming in 2010
The good folks at Libertas Film Magazine and their fellow conservatives (like the redhead who sits on the other side of my cubicle) who are eagerly anticipating the Nov. 24 opening of the "Red Dawn'' remake may have to wait a good while longer.
Patrick Goldstein of the L.A. Times reports MGM's dire financial straits are going to indefinitely delay the new version, which has Chinese communists invading the American heartland.
Goldstein also quotes "insiders'' as taking issue with the $75 million pricetag quoted by Libertas -- it's more like $42 million, thanks to tax rebates -- and the magazine's assertion that Toby Keith is on the soundtrack.
At this point, things are looking so bad at MGM that one reportedly hasn't even been recorded. There isn't a trailer, either.
Hopefully, the communist regime in China won't collapse before somebody gets around to releasing this remake.

Communication drives America's "China-scare" meme

There’s an interesting article in the Washington Post from former Beijing bureau chief (and author of the good book Chinese Lessons) John Pomfret and his colleague, Steven Mufson looking at the rising “red scare” meme in the US. The two journalists do their best to inject a needed dose of reality into a heated issue. It’s well worth reading the entire article, but a couple of paragraphs in particular caught my attention. Both point out that some of the current attention to China’s rivalry with the US is driven by communication in support of particular agendas:
[In] large part, politicians, activists and commentators push the new Red Scare to advance particular agendas in Washington. If you want to promote clean energy and get the government to invest in this sector, what better way to frame the issue than as a contest against the Chinese and call it the “new Sputnik”? Want to resuscitate the F-22 fighter jet? No better country than China to invoke as the menace of the future.

ALMOST half of Australians believe that China will become a military threat to Australia within 20 years, prompting record support for the US alliance.
According to the 2010 Lowy Institute foreign policy poll, 46 per cent of people think China will be a threat, with 19 per cent of them rating the possibility as "very likely".
And 55 per cent of the 1001 people surveyed named China as the world's top economic power, compared with 32 per cent for the United States.
