Nashville hospital executives among '100 most powerful' in health care

Five Nashville-area executives are among this year’s “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare” as named by readers of Modern Healthcare magazine.

David White, chairman and CEO of Franklin-based IASIS Healthcare comes in at No. 30 on this year’s list, followed by Community Health System Inc. Chairman Wayne Smith at No. 40 and LifePoint Hospitals Inc. CEO Bill Carpenter at No. 41.

Richard Bracken, chairman and CEO of HCA Inc. rang in at No. 49, while Vanguard Health Systems’ Charlie Martin placed No. 79.

President Barack Obama leads the list for the second-straight year, followed by Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Sen. Max Baucus of Montana and Sister Carol Keehan, president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association, rounded out the top 5.

All of the above are to be watched for medicare/healthcare fraud.

Scott Shakes Up Florida Governor Race With GOP Primary Win Over McCollum

snip
"This race was one for the ages. No one could have anticipated the entrance of a multi-millionaire with a questionable past who shattered campaign spending records and spent more in four months than has ever been spent in a primary race here in Florida," McCollum said.

snip
McCollum, who racked up endorsements from big Republican names, had hit Scott hard for past Medicare fraud allegations. Scott was the CEO of HCA/Columbia Hospitals when it settled the biggest Medicare fraud case in history -- Scott, who was forced out as CEO by his board amid the government investigation in 1997, has said repeatedly that he didn't know about any criminal activity and was never charged.

Ya just knew Scott was gonna win the primary with all the HCA ties/fraud allegations, who better to be Gov of Medicare Fraud Capital Florida? Should be fun to watch.

HCA IPO

Post  nikki6278 on Thu Aug 26, 2010 10:33 pm

HCA Buyout May Pay Off Big

When Nashville, Tenn. hospital chain HCA went private in 2006 for $33 billion it was the biggest leveraged buyout ever announced. Now, if the stock market cooperates, HCA hopes to go public this fall after only four years. But unlike other huge LBOs initiated in the prebust era, this one is likely to yield a handsome payout for its investors.

Estimates have it tripling the original $5.5 billion investment made by Bank of America ( BAC - news - people ), Bain Capital, KKR and the founding Frist family of Tennessee, led by Forbes 400 member Thomas (Tommy) Frist Jr. That works out to a 33% annual return, maybe not the blockbuster of the old private equity era but better than the market's 15% collapse over that period.

The secret to this good fortune is sound management and, ironically, passage of health care reform. The Frists restructured the company's board, filling two seats with a third generation--Tommy Frist's two sons.

Healthspring

HealthSpring To Buy Medicare Co Bravo Health For $545M

HealthSpring Inc. (HS) has agreed to acquire closely held Medicare-coverage provider Bravo Health Inc. for $545 million, building the insurer's presence in the changing Medicare Advantage market.

Federal health-care overhaul changes call for $136 billion in cuts over the next decade to private insurers that run Medicare Advantage plans, a public-private hybrid that generally offers more benefits than traditional Medicare plans. The reductions start in 2012.

Nonetheless, HealthSpring has been pushing further into Medicare Advantage. Such membership for the company was up 8.3% in the second quarter from a year ago, putting the total at 197,436. There are about 11 million people in Medicare Advantage, one-quarter of the Americans enrolled in Medicare.

Bravo Health had more than 100,000 Medicare Advantage members and will give HealthSpring a presence in the Philadelphia area.

Healthspring is gonna be one of the "big players" of Healthcare reform.

Health reform hearing

Oral arguments begin in federal healthcare law case

TALLAHASSEE -- Florida takes center stage this week in the fight over the federal health care law that consumed Congress for the better part of a year, and along with it, so will a Pensacola judge who is no stranger to hot button issues.

U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson, a Reagan nominee to the bench who presided over two high profile abortion clinic violence cases in the 1980s and 1990s, will hear oral arguments on the U.S. Department of Justice's motion to dismiss the lawsuit filed against the health care law by Florida and 18 other states on Tuesday.

The plaintiffs, the states, argue that the health care law illegally requires all citizens and legal residents to have health care coverage or pay a tax penalty, which they say is a violation the U.S. Constitution's Commerce Clause. The plaintiffs also say the law runs afoul of the states' rights guarantee in the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Most dental schools increase their enrollment by 50 % or more, by the word of mouth. Of course the insurance companies do not want to increase reimbursement. This will lead to lower cost of labor...
