Protests, Rhetoric Feed Jihadists' Fire

Islamic radicals are seizing on protests against a planned Islamic community center near Manhattan's Ground Zero and anti-Muslim rhetoric elsewhere as a propaganda opportunity and are stepping up anti-U.S. chatter and threats on their websites.

One jihadist site vowed to conduct suicide bombings in Florida to avenge a threatened Koran burning, while others predicted an increase in terrorist recruits as a result of such actions.

"By Allah, the wars are heated and you Americans are the ones who…enflamed it," says one such posting. "By Allah you will be the first to taste its flames."

Critics of the proposed Islamic center said their right to speak out shouldn't be influenced by the possibility of jihadist threats. "We will never win a war when we are afraid to even name our enemies," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said in an e-mail Sunday.

Mosque Planner Says Opposition Goes 'Beyond Islamophobia'

A leader of a planned Muslim community center near Manhattan's Ground Zero compared opposition to the project to the persecution of Jews, in comments that could add to the controversy over the center's proposed site.

We are deeply concerned, because this is like a metastasized antisemitism," said Daisy Khan, who is spearheading the project with her husband, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf. "It's beyond Islamophobia. It's hate of Muslims."

‘Anti-terror’ data found in street

Police were investigating the contents of a computer memory stick said to contain sensitive anti-terror material which was reportedly found in the street outside a police station.

The four-inch USB storage device was alleged to have contained more than 2,000 pages of confidential information, including strategies on combating terror attacks.

The memory stick was found by a 36-year-old businessman on a pavement outside the station in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, said the Daily Star on Sunday.

It reported the device was emblazoned with the initials GMP POTU, standing for Greater Manchester Police Public Order Training Unit, and the files enclosed were produced by the National Police Improvement Agency on the subject of counter-terrorism and tactical deployment.

Names of officers, their ranks and divisions were also uncovered by the businessman when he fitted the stick into his laptop, the newspaper added.

Four Codes for Dealing With Suspects

New guidelines have been issued instructing New York City police officers when to arrest suspected terrorists or when to release them without alerting the suspects they’re being watched, according to a police memo reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

The New York Police Department has been informed that officers will receive one of four “handling codes” if they encounter someone listed in the National Crime Information Center’s terrorist database. The guidelines were issued Aug. 20.

“Counterterrorism is now part and parcel of the NYPD crime-fighting mission,” NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said.

Stuxnet malware is 'weapon' out to destroy ... Iran's Bushehr nuclear plant?
The Stuxnet malware has infiltrated industrial computer systems worldwide. Now, cyber security sleuths say it's a search-and-destroy weapon meant to hit a single target. One expert suggests it may be after Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant.


The appearance of Stuxnet created a ripple of amazement among computer security experts. Too large, too encrypted, too complex to be immediately understood, it employed amazing new tricks, like taking control of a computer system without the user taking any action or clicking any button other than inserting an infected memory stick. Experts say it took a massive expenditure of time, money, and software engineering talent to identify and exploit such vulnerabilities in industrial control software systems.

Unlike most malware, Stuxnet is not intended to help someone make money or steal proprietary data. Industrial control systems experts now have concluded, after nearly four months spent reverse engineering Stuxnet, that the world faces a new breed of malware that could become a template for attackers wishing to launch digital strikes at physical targets worldwide. "Until a few days ago, people did not believe a directed attack like this was possible," Ralph Langner, a German cyber-security researcher, told the Monitor in an interview. He was slated to present his findings at a conference of industrial control system security experts Tuesday in Rockville, Md. "What Stuxnet represents is a future in which people with the funds will be able to buy an attack like this on the black market. This is now a valid concern."

Iranian president asserts U.S. orchestrated 9/11 attacks

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made a series of incendiary remarks in his speech to the U.N. General Assembly on Thursday, notably the assertion that the United States orchestrated the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to rescue its declining economy, to reassert its weakening grip on the Middle East and to save Israel.

Those comments prompted at least 33 delegations to walk out, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, all 27 members of the European Union and the union’s representative, diplomats said.

He said there were three theories about the origins of the Sept. 11 attacks, including “that some segments within the U.S. government orchestrated the attack to reverse the declining American economy and its grips on the Middle East in order also to save the Zionist regime.”

The U.S. Mission to the United Nations swiftly issued a terse response.

“Rather than representing the aspirations and goodwill of the Iranian people, Ahmadinejad has yet again chosen to spout vile conspiracy theories and anti-Semitic slurs that are as abhorrent and delusional as they are predictable,” it said in a statement.

It was not the first time Ahmadinejad espoused the theory but never before so publicly.

“The majority of the American people, as well as other nations and politicians, agree with this view,” he said.
