SPACE/Aliens

Post  nikki6278 on Thu Sep 30, 2010 10:09 am

Astronomers say they've found the first planet beyond our solar system that could have the right size and setting to sustain life as we know it, only 20 light-years from Earth.

"My own personal feeling is that the chances of life on this planet are 100 percent," Steven Vogt, an astrophysicist at the University of California at Santa Cruz, told reporters today. "I have almost no doubt about it."

The discovery, published online in The Astrophysical Journal, is the result of 11 years of observations at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii. Astronomers participating in the Lick-Carnegie Exoplanet Survey detected the planet by tracking the faint gravitational wobbles it produced in its parent star. Now they say there may well be many more planets out there like this one.

"The fact that we were able to detect this planet so quickly and so nearby tells us that planets like this must be really common," Vogt said in a news release.

Celebrating a Flurry of Activity, NASA Dubs Next 23 Months the "Year Of the Solar System"

Post  nikki6278 on Sat Oct 09, 2010 8:11 am

NASA is preparing a flurry of new spacecraft launches, planetary flybys and orbital insertions in the next two years, and is celebrating the “Year of the Solar System” to mark the occasion. Twenty-three months is actually a Martian year, so hey, it works.

The space agency has dozens of missions at any given time, and scientists are always maneuvering some spacecraft into a new orbit or into a new trajectory. But the next two years will see triple the usual amount of activity, NASA says. The second half of 2011 will be as busy, space-wise, as entire decades of the space age, according to Jim Green, NASA’s planetary science director.

snip
"History will remember the period Oct. 2010 through Aug. 2012 as a golden age of planetary exploration,” Green said.

Strange Signal Comes From Alien Planet, Scientist Says

Strange Signal Comes From Alien Planet, Scientist Says

The recent discovery of Gliese 581g, an alien planet in the habitable zone of another star, has been an exciting development for scientists probing the galaxy for signs of extraterrestrial life. At least one claim of a possible signal from the planet has already surfaced – and been met with harsh skepticism among the science community.

Following the Sept. 29 announcement of the discovery of Gliese 581g, astronomer Ragbir Bhathal, a scientist at the University of Western Sydney, claimed to have detected a suspicious pulse of light nearly two years ago, that came from the same area of the galaxy as the location of Gliese 581g, according to the U.K.’s Daily Mail online. [Alien Planet Gliese581g: FAQ]

Bhathal is a member of the Australian chapter of SETI, a non-profit scientific organization that is dedicated to research, exploration and education in the field of astrobiology.

UN Space expert denies being alien ambassador

Post  nikki6278 on Fri Oct 15, 2010 7:49 pm

UN Space expert denies being alien ambassador

A Malaysian astrophysicist, Mazlan Othman, has denied British media reports that she is the United Nations (UN) ambassador for space aliens.

She says there no such job title, but if aliens did get in touch the UN would be the ideal place to start.

Ms Othman, whose official title is Head of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, says that life in outer space is likely to be bacteria.

"When I mean life, it's not people like you and I, but it could just be bacteria. When we're talking about life, we're not talking about green aliens, okay," she said.

"Sometimes this is the connotation of when we say extra-terrestrial life, it always must be green aliens with large, lovely eyes. But no, we're talking about bacteria."

Suddenly, Lots of Talk About One-Way Missions to Space

Post  nikki6278 on Tue Oct 26, 2010 11:37 pm

Suddenly, Lots of Talk About One-Way Missions to Space

Just last weekend, NASA Ames Director Simon "Pete" Worden was quoted as saying that NASA has "just started a project with DARPA" called the Hundred Year Starship with the long-range goal of settling other planets. (DARPA is an acronym for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.)

The general idea would be to send humans to destinations where they would live out the remainder of their lives.

snip
The rationale for a mission to Mars? Species preservation.

"We are a vulnerable species living in a part of the galaxy where cosmic events such as major asteroid and comet impacts and supernova explosions pose a significant threat to life on Earth, especially to human life. There are also more immediate threats to our culture, if not our survival as a species. These include global pandemics, nuclear or biological warfare, runaway global warming, sudden ecological collapse and supervolcanoes Thus, the colonization of other worlds is a must if the human species is to survive for the long term."snip
DARPA subsequently issued a statement to CBSNews.com confirmed that it was working on a joint study with NASA Ames to explore the potential of developing "breakthrough technologies" that would be needed for long-duration space missions.

"A key element of the study is exploring models by which sustained co-investment by the private sector in these areas can be incentivized. The study is currently in the early formulation stage, but will be entirely open and unclassified, with more details forthcoming in early 2011."http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-501465_162-20020658-501465.html

After the CERN info..this creeped me out "We are a vulnerable species living in a part of the galaxy where cosmic events such as major asteroid and comet impacts and supernova explosions pose a significant threat to life on Earth. Do we buy that one way ticket ?

NASA’s human-like Robonaut to join Space Station crew

Post  nikki6278 on Tue Nov 09, 2010 1:53 am

NASA’s human-like Robonaut to join Space Station crew

NASA reports, they will launch the first human-like robot to space when Discovery’s six STS-133 launches at the end of November.
The Robonaut, better known as R2, will become a permanent resident of the International Space Station. R2 was developed jointly by NASA and General Motors under a cooperative agreement to develop a robotic assistant that can work alongside humans, whether they are astronauts in space or workers at GM manufacturing plants on Earth.

snip
There are currently four Robonauts, with others currently in development. This allows NASA scientists to study various types of mobility, control methods, and task applications. The value of a humanoid over other designs is the ability to use the same workspace and tools – not only does this improve efficiency in the types of tools, but also removes the need for specialized robotic connectors.
The Robonauts, which are being built at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, are essential to NASA’s future as they go beyond low earth orbit and continue to explore the vast wonder that is space.
One advantage of the humanoid design is that Robonaut 2 can take over simple, repetitive, or especially dangerous tasks on sites such as the International Space Station. Because R2 is approaching human dexterity, tasks such as changing out an air filter can be performed without modifications to the existing design, the final goal of NASA’s is to build a robot with dexterity that exceeds that of a suited astronaut.
NASA officials say, “Our challenge is to build machines that can help humans work and explore in space. Working side by side with humans, or going where the risks are too great for people, Robonauts will expand our ability for construction and discovery.”
